birkin does not 'make' bags, Birkin is the name of a bag style, and was so called because French actress/singer Jane Birkin loves it. It was not supposed to be a feminine bag, it was originally designed as travel bag, and nowadays you can use a birkin as a casual tote bag or if you like to look more feminine or luxury, you can always choose a smaller size, with candy colors or even exotic leathers studded with diamonds.
Another famous bag made by Hermes is the "Kelly" bag, which you might find it more feminine, and it was made famous by Grace Kelly.
Birkin makes the most dreadful bags I have ever seen, very unfeminine.
